What Is an Invoice – and What Should It Include?
An invoice is a document a seller gives a buyer that lists the goods or services supplied, their quantity and price, any taxes, the total amount due and how to pay. It is the formal request for payment – and, for registered businesses, the record that tax authorities and accountants rely on.
Invoice meaning in Hindi: an invoice is commonly called बीजक (beejak) or simply बिल (bill). In everyday speech in India, “bill” and “invoice” are often used for the same thing.
What to include on every invoice
- Your business details – name, address, phone, email and GSTIN if you are registered.
- Customer details – name and address, plus the customer's GSTIN for B2B GST invoices.
- A unique invoice number and the invoice date (and a due date if you give credit).
- Line items – description, quantity, rate and amount; HSN/SAC codes on GST invoices.
- Taxes – CGST + SGST within a state, or IGST between states, shown rate-wise.
- Total, in figures and words, plus payment details such as bank account or UPI ID.
- Terms and signature – payment terms, notes and an authorised signatory.

Invoice number format
Use a simple, consecutive series such as INV/2026-27/001. Under GST, invoice numbers must be unique for a financial year and up to 16 characters long, using letters, numbers, hyphens or slashes. Many businesses restart the series every April.
